On a cold day off, I decided that hot chocolate was the answer. This was the posh hot chocolate, which usually comes with little marshmallows, but on this particular day they had run out, so I got chocolate buttons instead. The combination of the whipped cream and the chocolate buttons (which slowly melted as you drank it) was fantastic, if rather rich.
All in all, the perfect drink for a cold, drizzly day in Newcastle!
The words “Power Smoothie” conjured up visions of a mighty concoction with plenty of substance. It did not disappoint. I couldn’t imagine a beefier drink that didn’t contain meat (this is actually a meat-free drink). From my memory it contained yoghurt, honey and milk, with the real thickness coming from the mashed bananas and crumbled wheat biscuits (I’m not enough of an expert to tell whether it was real Weetabix).
As an accompaniment to a large meal, I found this drink to be a little too much, and it isn’t exactly thirst-quenching. However, if you are too lazy to masticate through proper solid food, I can recommend this as a tasty liquid form of a healthy snack!

There are two new smoothies on the updated menu and this is one of them. It involves blueberries, black grapes and grape juice. Although Elly remains dubious about the combination, I think it’s lovely — sweet but refreshing.
The other thing that’s really impressed me in recent months is the speed of preparation of smoothies at Belle & Herbs. Time was, you’d order and it would take a good twenty minutes before you had a chance of your smoothie arriving — these days it’s more like 5 mins

I had one of my favourites, the Eggs Benedict, which was very enjoyable, but not the best I’ve ever enjoyed there. I also decided to have this normal hot chocolate (usually I choose the more extravagant option. It was LOVELY. Nice and light, but beautifully chocolatey as well. Definitely a good start to the morning!

We went along to Belle & Herbs rather late on this Sunday afternoon. When trying to order some regular smoothies, they explained they’d had a massive rush that morning and so the regular smoothies were all off! They were, however, offering this one — a random combination of all the fruit left in the kitchen!
I must say it was very refreshing — I detected pineapple, orange and plenty of blackcurrant (as you can probably guess from the colour), but really not sure what else was in there!

This is seriously, seriously rich and you really shouldn’t order it if you want a nice light drink. That said, if you fancy something decadent then it is perfect! It has serious quantity (there’s about half a litre there) and great taste too.

Belle and Herbs’ trademark smoothie is a great combination of apple, melon, orange, strawberry and possibly a bunch of other ingredients I’ve forgotten. Lovely mix, great taste

One of the set recipe smoothies on the menu, the Berry Smoothie is made with Raspberries, Cranberries, Cherries and Redcurrents. It’s quite tart, and packed full of flavour. And not only that, it’s the most fantastic colour – it’s a wonderful dark red/purple!!

The best thing about having a smoothie at Belle and Herbs is that after you order it you tend to see someone go past with an entire jug of fruit pieces. If you crane your neck a bit you can also see them blitz it into mush and add all the juices and ice and things.
This melon and orange smoothie was lovely. I thought they did particularly well to not overpower the delicate melon flavours with too much orange.
There’s a whole section of the Belle and Herbs drinks menu dedicated to Smoothies. You can either pick one of their specials, or design-your-own from a list of fruit. The best thing is watching people wandering between front-of-house and the kitchen with jugs full of fruit.
The Strawberry & Raspberry (with fromage frais) Smoothie I had was delicious. Sometimes you get a smoothie where one of the flavours completely overpowers all the others. This is not the case here. It’s fruity and creamy and absolutely heavenly.
